This is the dawn of a new era. On the educational front, a landmark project is rising from the horizon in the shape of ‘National Institute of Health & Social Sciences’, Islamabad. This is a collaboration of Defence Housing Authority Islamabad Education Foundation with Partners Harvard Medical International USA. This would be a project comprising of a state of the art hospital along with 5 colleges which are as follows:


        • Nursing College
        • Allied Health College
        • Dental College
        • Pharmacy College 
        • Medical College
      This would be an opportunity to acquire quality education at your doorstep;
      
Over 31,000 students pass FSc. in 1st Division. Approx. 5,000 get admission in medical colleges. Out of   26,000 remaining, about 900 go abroad and spend over Rs.4.5 billion of foreign exchange. W.H.O recommends one doctor for 1,000 people, so 150000 doctors are required .Another 58,000 are required due to Population growth.
      
Our vision is the establishment of an International Standard Medical University that meets the local regional demand to save foreign exchange and to produce human resource compatible in International market. Thus creating job opportunities and earn foreign exchange, Establishment of a reliable Research Center to support the mission of the institution and attract Research Grants. In order to do so, establishment of a state of the art hospital, accredited by Joint Commission International is inevitable which will also attract medical tourism and earn foreign exchange. Continuous professional development for faculty and staff can be achieved by quality management programs resulting in maintenance of international and local accreditation.
 
Partners Harvard Medical International entered into an initial agreement with DHAI in 2006. Following an initial assessment and site visit, PHMI developed a proposal for DHAI which resulted in a long-term MOU for 10years, governing the collaborative efforts to create a comprehensive academic medical center as part of the DHAI Phase 2 development. PHMI agreed to act in an advisory function, co-develop or review the various aspects of the project, focusing on governance, strategy, programmatic elements, human resource development, quality management, facilities and systems.
 
Over the past year, PHMI has been working with DHAI Education Foundation, its managing partner OMG and its task force to develop a Master Plan for the site looking for the next 20 years. This was done mainly by SASSAKI. SASSAKI are well known planners of THE OLYMPIC CITY, Beijing, China. ELLERBE BECKET was engaged for architectural work which are ranked as one of the top 5 in the US. ARUP have also created a new destination for the region.
  
This realization of the master plan and architectural work in progress is a testament to the strong vision and collaboration across the planning team – and the result will have a transformative impact on the delivery of health care and education in health sciences in our nation.
  
The information technology has made it possible to conduct the capacity building of the staff and faculty through state- of- the- art facilities of multidisciplinary virtual centre. The inauguration of our Capacity Building Center is the first functioning unit of the National Institute of Health & Social Sciences which would be working as a staff college for faculty development. It will remain functioning throughout the life of the university aligned with international standards and will be a permanent source of providing the critical mass for the upcoming hospital.
  
This project holds great significance and value for DHA Islamabad, our country and the team. It will introduce better prospects for Pakistan, boosting foreign exchange earnings, medical tourism, medical research and international job opportunities. This project on its completion will increase the value of surrounding land, create more than 3000 jobs in the hospital and more than 2000 in the university. It is a larger than life project which will improve the image of Pakistan internationally.
  
DHAI Education Foundation has taken monumental stride to setup a state- of- the- art teaching hospital alongside a health and social sciences university in collaboration with Partners Harvard Medical International, USA, to meet the demand of quality medical institution in the country. DHAI Education Foundation has entered in a long term relationship with Partners Harvard Medical USA to build a health and social science university, christened National Institute of Health Sciences.
